Alexa only tracks those who have downloaded the Alexa toolbar. If your audience is the type who would download the Alexa toolbar, then you can get better rankings on it.
The most trustworthy ranking of websites is Nielsen/NetRating — the thing is they typically release only the top 10. Big companies have to buy their reports which are pretty expensive.
So smaller guys on the Web have to contend with Alexa — no matter how flawed. Just keep in mind how Alexa works.
